Mother-daughter celebration

On our first day in Jeddah, we had the privilege of watching a special event take place at Dar Al-Hekma. With the senior class about a month away from graduating, the College held a reception for the young women and their mothers. In the early afternoon, the students and their mothers began to gather in the sunny atrium that lies in the center of the College. The women were greeting one another with kisses (Hind told us it is customary to kiss one cheek, then the other twice, if you are especially happy to see someone). They were all dressed beautifully and stylishly. The atmosphere was energetic and festive. The Dean of the College, as well as several Vice Deans (including our primary client Dr. Saleha Abedin), spoke to the women and gave them advice for their future.

To be able to see such a special occasion on our first day was quite a treat. My initial reaction was, “This is such a beautiful ceremony, let me get my camera!” Then, I realized that taking pictures was not possible because the women were not wearing their abayas and headscarves. It was a fascinating experience for me. On the one hand, I was disappointed not to be able to document the occasion and share it with others. On the other hand, I was honored to be part of a moment in time that could only be experienced that day, as a women, in Dar Al-Hekma College.

  1. Interesting - think our constant camera flashes detract somewhat from the specialness of the moment? I mean, why enjoy the moment if you can look back on it and enjoy it later?
